Ciaran is the Principal of CDS Law & Tax. He is a qualified Solicitor, Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Advisor, being a fellow of the Irish Taxation Institute. Ciaran trained as a chartered accountant with Arthur Andersen before joining Matheson Ormsby Prentice, one of Ireland’s largest law firms, where he became a partner in the Tax and Commercial Department. He returned to Cork in January 2000 and founded McGuire Desmond Solicitors. In August 2015, after 16 years with McGuire Desmond, he established his own practice.
Innovative and solutions led, Ciaran’s expertise extends to extensive experience structuring domestic and international corporate acquisitions, mergers and reorganisations, inward investment, tax investments, property development, cross border tax planning, pension structure advice, NAMA business cases, bank restructuring, debt resolution, dispute resolution and providing high net worth individuals with both tax and corporate advice.
Ciaran has been the advisor in a number of leading taxation cases in Ireland including two successful Supreme Court decisions against the Revenue (Harris V. Revenue Commissioners and the H William decision on interest deductibility) and has also been involved in the noteworthy decision in the High Court case of Quigley V. Harris. Ciaran continues to be involved in leading tax Revenue Investigation cases and currently has a number of cases pending in the Circuit Court and High Court in Ireland as well as in the new Tax Appeals Commission.
He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and a member of the Council of the Irish Taxation Institute for the past nine years. Ciaran has presented the annual Finance Act tour for the Institute of Taxation in Ireland and has been the author of FINAK on three separate occasions. He lecturers regularly for the Irish Taxation Institute and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is a regular speaker at the Irish Tax Institute flagship Annual Tax Conference, most recently in 2015.
